KISS MY AXE

King Bagsecg (James Cosmo) is on his death bed. He tasks his son Steinar (Charlie Bewley) to find his older brother Hakan (Elliot Cowan) who had been banned. Steinar travels with a group of men to find Ivar (Ivan Kaye) who may know his whereabouts. Steinar has a brother (Finlay Robertson) and half brother(Theo Barklem-Biggs), neither of which are warriors.

Ivar prefers the companionship of young boys. The film utilizes grindhouse style in its introductions and fighting. Both the Vikings and Saxons have British accents. I thought the Vikings had thicker accents. There were numerous anachronisms in the speech, slang, and general ideology. The ending of the film had me scratching my head as it turns into a bizarre apocalyptic Mad Max scene.

I do not consider this a pseudo history in the same vein as the others that have been released, it is too far off the track.

Makes for an odd historical rental.

Accuracy

I don't know about accuracy, but that was not what I was looking for, when I watched this. It was the action and the entertainment it promised. This was part of the Frightfest program and as such it was a nice view. I had an unfortunate incident happen to me after that screening (of material kind, but nothing tragic), but that didn't take away the fun I had while watching this movie.

Not the best movie ever and filled with clichés obviously, this still does not hold back on punches and has some nice action sequences in it. The story is simple and the small group with it simple archetypes/characters is easy to follow too. You'll either jump on that bandwagon, while it rides by or you won't. You'll be able to tell fairly fast. Nice cinematography by the way

Agree with the haters

This should have been my film. Vikings! A family quest! Gritty realism! No name actors ready to give it all! Instead it was a tedious race to the next fight scene or murder, featuring: a predictable story line (such as it is); dialogue more grunted than spoken; production values from a Tom Baker era Doctor Who; one of the cheesier soundtracks in recent memory; two-dimensional characterizations of the primary roles that left me completely uncaring to their trials.

The story was my biggest complaint. At times, like others have said, it felt like a teenage slasher flick, with the only question being who dies next and how. And then it got weird, with an Apocalypse Now descent into madness.

Within 20 minutes, I just didn't care anymore. I don't give up on a film easily, so I kept with it. But I wish I hadn't.
