It just seems like it could have been a lot better.

'KILL SWITCH': Three Stars (Out of Five)

A sci-fi/thriller about a physicist, and former pilot, who must save the universe when an experiment, dealing with unlimited quantum energy, goes horrifically wrong. It stars Dan Stevens, Berenice Marlohe, Tygo Gernandt, Charity Wakefield and Mike Reus. It was directed by first time feature filmmaker Tim Smit, and it was written by Charlie Kindinger and Omid Nooshin. I found it to be a mildly entertaining, and somewhat interesting, sci-fi/thriller flick.

The story is set in the near future, when a power company (called Alterplex) has built a huge tower which can access unlimited quantum energy. Strange things begin occurring around the world though, because of this new power device, and former pilot (and physicist) Will Porter (Stevens) is called on to help. He's sent into an alternate universe (which is a mirrored version of Earth); and it also has a giant tower which controls quantum energy. Once there Will realizes that this universe is in much worse shape than his own, and he has to team-up with alternate versions of people that he knows (in his own world), in order to try to save both of their dimensions.

Most of the movie is filmed in a first-person perspective, like a video game. I think this effect worked well in the 2015 action flick 'HARDCORE HENRY', but here it's a little less effective; primarily because this film doesn't 100% commit to it. I think Dan Stevens is a good actor (especially in the awesome 2014 action-thriller 'THE GUEST'), but here his talents are a little wasted (especially since he's barely on screen in it). The film has a great premise though, and some cool effects, it just seems like it could have been a lot better in my opinion.

First Person Shooters, the worst thing ever created in movies.

I think the only people that can like this movie are full-time gamers. Fans of the First Person Shooter games. Because Kill Switch is just like watching a person playing that game. I do like playing a game every now and then but I don't like watching somebody play because there is no thrill in that. Neither did I like this movie. It's taking boring to another level. I had to fight several times to not fall asleep. The story is not the worst, it's the execution that is really bad. The CGI's are also poorly done. A game looks actually better than this. About the acting is not much to say. The so-called star of the movie just appears in the beginning, for the rest it's just what he sees that you will see. Why they still shoot movies like that is a mystery to me. It never worked and it will never work. Name one movie that has been shot like that that has success. There are just none.

Mirror Mirror

Will Porter (Dan Stevens) is a physicist and a NASA pilot. He is recruited to work for Alterplex Energy with all kinds of secrecy. He moves from the states to Europe and takes along his sister and mute nephew. The science fiction is a bad extrapolation of duplicate particle and string theory. Alterplex has created a device (see DVD cover) that will create an echo universe of our own and extract matter from it and convert it to energy. If you had a machine that can simply convert matter to energy, you really don't need another universe, but that would kill the tale. There is not supposed to be any life in this other universe...but there is. Things go bad and Will must hit the kill switch to turn it off or both universes die. The kill switch consists of a X-Box with a big push button. The film consists mostly of him fighting off people and drones in the other universe as he attempts to break the connection.

The film was run away, being chased with occasional flashbacks. The characters were never developed, just like a video game. Much of the filming was low budget first person jerk camera, similar to a video game. When I watch a movie, I really don't want to watch a video game. There are enough dweebs who put that stuff on U-Tube if I want to watch someone play a game. Clearly a film that might appeal to someone who grew up playing video games. Personally I think they missed having a clever ending. Rather than do Disney on us, end the film at Porter's last blackout scene and then run the credits in mirror image. Not too late to add that alternative ending to the DVD.
